I am a 3 gun novice and have a chance to buy a used 930SPX model without the pistol grip. Am I doing something wrong or is this a good way to get into business without spending a lot? I know that the old models had lots of quality problems. I may be able to buy this for about $500. I would appreciate your thoughts and advice.

I realize you posted this two months ago, but if you haven't purchased a shotgun yet, I'd go with the standard 930 instead of the SPX. I've seen/heard of issues with the SPXs. Also, I'm not a fan of the sights on the SPX.

I've got a standard 930 with a fiber optic bead-type sight (much better for 3-gun IME). I personally know two other guns that set their 930s up like mine and none of us have had any real issues.
The timer holds no fear, the beep will set you free...
