I run a Vortex HS 1-4 on my rifle and I think it works just fine on the close-up stuff. I think it's a great scope.
ETA: On super bright sunny days the illumination is pretty much useless, but the reticle design still brings your eye to the center dot pretty well. I haven't experienced any issues as a result.

If you could marry the best of the TR24 with the Vortex PST in a scope costing $700, I would buy a dozen. (well can't afford that many but it would be cool).
I really like the Vortex except for the illumination which sucks the big one. Pat |

I have used my HS on targets as close as 10 feet with no problems at all. I like the reticle on the Vortex better than other 1x scopes. Will say I am not a real fan of illuminated reticles for daylight shooting so the illumination not being bright enough is not a problem.
Hitting an 8 inch steel plate at 400 yards isn't a problem either once holder over or turret adjustments were figured out. |

I find illumination like a fiber optic pistol or shotgun sight makes shooting faster because you pic up your aiming reference faster. Pat |

Black sights on my 1911. Post with a appature rear on the shotgun. Problem I have with ilumination in a scope is when bright enough to see in daylight, it seems like it is shinning a light in your eye. Have used just a red dot and don't get that. I suppose if I used a day light visable illuminated scope I could get used to it but for me I don't know that it would help me shoot faster.
