I'm going to be traveling through that area next week. A rib joint would be great, but I'm open to other suggestions.

There's this hole in the wall burger joint:

This place rules. Get the burger from Hell. My Sister-in-law moved away from Amarillo years ago and I still dream about this place.

If I jogged there from St. Louis I might be able to work up the appetite for that.

The Big Texan is an overpriced tourist trap with mediocre food at best....

The Big Texan is a tourist trap. You can try Coyote Bluff but they have only 30 seats in the place and they are usually full. An alternative is Cowboy Gellato on 6th Street (Old Route 66) some of the best burgers I've ever had- they cook the cheese inside the patty.....the guy that runs it was trained in Italy as a Chef. Makes excellent gellato as well! If you don't want to leave I40 I suggest Hoffbrau Steaks, exit at Coulter.

Its a tourist trap. None of the locals hardly ever eat there.

If you wanted to go out of the way id tell you go head North on US83 at Shamrock and swing by a place called Maxeys Steak House in Wheeler. I knew the original owner and know his son who runs it now.
Best CFS you ever had!

I'm, always happy to eat a good steak, but I thought Texas was known for ribs. No good rib joints that way?

If you get there during the daytime, go to the stockyards. Fresh beef! The cow was probably killed not more than 20 min before you eat it.

I wouldn't think of Texas when I want ribs....steaks, brisket, and sausage sure....ribs, not so much.

a big +1, another good place is to keep going past Amarillo and stop in Vega and eat at the Boot Hill Saloon, awesome food for a pretty reasonable price. link

Even though its a chain restaurant, i would give Famous Daves a try, their ribs are fall of the bone tender and they have a good selection of sauces. Its right across from the mall on the west side of Amarillo, just exit Soncy and you will see it on the right.

The Country Barn Steakhouse is not a high dollar steakhouse, but it is pretty good. Located right off I40. They have a broad menu and good mixed drinks, too.

As a Road Electrician I have the chance to eat at allot of places. I take pride in the amount of steakhouse visits I have made in fact. Anyway My wife and I went to the Big Texan and it was by far the WORST steakhouse I have ever been to. Its all show and shitty food. For a good steak there is a place in Shamrock which is about 40 miles east of Amarillo. Its just north of 40 at why 83 going towards Wheeler. Only open after either 4 or 5pm. The next best option is the Cattleman's Steakhouse in OKC.

I have been disappointed in the local steaks. Macaroni Joe's is a swanky place, but it has a damn good steak. B.L. Bistro is swanky as well and has a damn good bone in ribeye. The prime rib at Abuelo's is wonderful. Rudy's is a small chain, but it has good I-40 BBQ; however, I would veer off of I-40 for a good meal. Texas Roadhouse sucks. Salt Grass sucks. Logans Roadhouse is so-so. Honestly, I would go for the Mexican food. There are a lot of good Tex-Mex joints and some authentic ones too. As all of the other locals have stated, stay away from the tourist trap.

Very good steaks. Damn good fresh salads. Great bread. Great service. We would zip over there from Shamrock during deer season a couple of times per year. Another good one is Maxey's Steakhouse in Wheeler, but it's 25 miles North of I40/Shamrock on 83.

Don't know if it is too late but do yourself a favor. Eat here. I live in Amarillo and eat here often. Bring cash or a check. They don't accept cards. There is often a line out the door. Get the green Chile burger and some cheese fries and a beer. Service is so so but the food is amazing.

The big Texan is nasty and the only people that go there are people stopping through. Don't waste your time or money.

If you are looking for BBQ try Rudy's off I40 and western. That's great too. If you want a steak try Hoffbrau steak house at I40 and coulter.
