Academy shotgun shell sale - get ready for DOVE SEASON!

Just got the Academy sales flier. Winchester 12 and 20ga loads in 7.5 and #8 are on sale for $3.99/box.

Remington has actually gone up recently to $6.39 from $5.99 - another 7% increase. I'm not spending that kind of money when I can get the Winchester for $3.99/box.

[ETA] Sales flier was in the Austin area; hopefully it's in effect in other parts of the state as well...

They are regularly priced $3.99 at Gander Mountain this year and they've got corn for $4.99 also. Huge cuts from last years prices.

Dick's has a "buy one get one half off" sale for Remington heavy dove loads, but I'm afraid to check what their prices are...

[ETA] Looks like Dick's price for the Remington Heavy Dove or Winchester Super Target loads is 29.99/100, or $45/200 on sale. That comes out to about $5.69/box.

How much is the state going to rape us for a combo license with tags this year?

Now the big question: 7.5 or 8?

Want to really get fired up?

Not more than 3 years ago the price for a combo lifetime license was 1200

Either last year or the year before they DOUBLED the cost. It's now 2400. Or was when last i checked.

Now it'd take 35 years to pay itself back, at the current rate - assuming you bought a supercombo every year.

I picked up a case at Academy Tuesday for $39.99. 7.5 has always been my preference.

I buy 5-10 flats of #8 every year when they have this sale. Keeps me stocked for the year for sporting clays & skeet. I guess this was a slow year because I still have 4 flats in the closet.

7.5 is my choice most of the time. Going to the Grapevine store to grab some after work.

6. We discussed this already. 7.5's if you're feeling froggy.

8's if you think you can shoot like Dave.

It was a $1000 and went up last year to $1800 for lifetime supercombo.

Jut hunting or fishing were like 500 and went to $1000 each.

A couple of hunting forums I spend a lot of time on seem to think that the Supercombo will be $100 next year.

This is what makes me mad. The only place I fish or hunt (dove and quail ) is on my own property. My county has a deer season that is bow only. If you must tax me for that I really don't need everything else that's included in the license.

Dick's Sporting Goods has Remington STS shells for $6.98.There is a $2 rebate for each box. Puts you into a premium shell for $4.98 a box. I bought some at two different Dick's and they rang up wrong both times. Had to show them the add. You also need to ask for the rebate coupon. You also have to take the barcode off each individual box to send in. A hassle, but a good buy!

From my experiences in South Texas last year, 7.5. I'm also going to pick up some 6. Some of those white wings seemed to be wearing kevlar. I had quite a few keep on flying after two solid hits. One white wing actually took 5 hits from three of us before it folded, we were using 7.5 & 8. I've got an old box of high brass #4 if they start pissing me off.

That is what you save the #2 high brass for.

Yup it was $1000 for lifetime hunting and fishing last year. I bought mine the last week they were available at that price and there was a line of people at TPWD headquarters in Austin buying lifetime licenses for themselves and some of them even for their middle school age kids. (Thanks dad....)

Not sure what the supercombo price is going to be this year. I though the pricing wasnt available until licenses went on sale for the coming year (Sept 1st 2010 - August 31st 2011) which I beleive they go on sale this weekend or next but could be wrong. I have also heard rumors that all licensing fees were going up in cost.

They SHOULD have connex boxes full of pallets behind the store. At least thats how it use to be at the store off Bryant Irvin.

I think I may try dove hunting for the first time this year. I saw quite a few at the ranch this week, funny thing is they normally take off right when the season opens and then come back in mid Nov.

Hmm... 1800 is a whole lot more palatable than 2400.

Do you walk out with your license when you submit in person at TPWD HQ? Is there a TPWD location in Houston?

What sorts of supporting documents do they require? I searched around a little bit on TPWD.gov but didn't find much.

A little fuzzy on the details since it was about a year ago but from what I remember I filled out the application, paid them with a check, and they printed out my paper license for the 2009-2010 season right there. You still have to get a actual "paper" license every year with all the tags, etc.

You don't need any additional documentation above what you need to get a regular in-state hunting license, which is basically a Texas drivers license.

A couple weeks later I received my TPWD lifetime hunting and fishing license card. Basically a credit card looking thing that has your name and hunter ed number on it.

Here is a crappy pic of what they look like:

Every year TPWD sends you a letter in the mail (I got mine a week a go or so) reminding you to go to any retail outlet to get a printout of your annual license with all the tags attached and to fill out the Migratory Game Bird HIP Questionaire. The printout is free since you are a lifetime license holder.

I am pretty new to this so I don't know what happens say if I never picked up my paper license with the tags and just went Dove hunting with the plastic license card (since Dove dont require any tag information). I am in Academy on a pretty regular basis so stopping by the terminal to have them print out a paper license isn't a big deal. I do go fishing around Austin with just the plastic card in my wallet.

I don't beleive there is a TPWD office in Houston, the main TWPD headquarters office is south of downtown Austin. If you don't live in town I beleive you apply for a lifetime license via fax or mail by downloading the application from the TPWD website and filling it out.
