I've never heard of them here, I've been hunting down in Southern Ohio most of my life, and have never seen them, or locals talk of them. Now over the last few years I'm hearing about it like crazy. My uncle picked one up on his trail cam down in vinton co., and there was two large ones spotted near Washington courthouse, about a half hour south from me last week. Anyone else got info??

Off topic for the other end of the state. But on topic for the tread.

Yes, there is at least one breeding pair. She has been seen on a trail cam that shows up now and again in the N.E.corner of Ashtbula county. Also been seen in the Pa And Western NY area. Two years ago she was seen looking very prego. in late winter in the Andover and linesville,Pa area. Seeing that she was looking very prego. There has to be a male cat some where with in a 150 miles of this lady.

She was believed to be a escape from the fur rancher that pulled a case of "let them all out when LEO was knocking on the door" back in 1998. She was a kitten then with her mother and sister. The mother was killed in 2000 in western NY. And the sister was live trapped about the same time in PA. The third young adult cat was never caught. Until a few years ago everyone had forgot about her. Then like clock work another Big mnt. lion started to be seen by trail cams around the south shore of lake Erie.

If you follow the habits of the western cats in the US and Canada. They can have a range of 150-200 miles. So just looking at a map. She could call home any where from Buffalo,NY to Northern Ohio. And fare south as Pitts.PA. My guess is she's staying out of sight above Rt 6 ( PA,OH), And east of Rt 11 in Ohio. And god only knows how fare into western NY. It's pretty Raul in that part of the state and there's a ton of good eats ( deer) to keep her and the kids from having a lot of human contact.

Now the male that did the breeding????????????

But just like the rest of the world. Where the ladies are, the men will not be fare behind. Where did he come from?? Who knows, but she sure was going to have kittens soon from the last cam photo in early March 2009.

Here's a couple emails I received regarding cat activity in the Southwestern Ohio (Cincinnati area):

September 2010:
I checked in with the big cat guru this evening learned there's a gent on South Road who's seen a large black "cougar" sized cat lurking around the salt block he set's out for the deer. He started to keep a camera at the ready and was able to take a picture. Unfortunately, it was around dusk and all he captured was 2 eyeball orbs reflecting back from the flash. Multiple trail cams are set out, yet to be collected.
I made the contact the 'cougarman' to pass on a hot one I ran into this afternoon. Seems a local woman was visiting her sister in Clifton this past Tuesday morning around 8am and saw a large yellowish cat with legs at least a foot long slink along the edge of the woods and then down the hill...out of sight. In her words "there's no way that it was a house cat".
That matches up with a sighting by 2 gents earlier this summer near the cemetery on Vine Street.

February 2011:
OMLW received 5 cougar sighting reports this week from Ohio.
West of Dayton near the Indiana border had a sighting.
Bowling Green Ohio had 2 in one day by the Airport runway.
A hunter in his deer stand had a cougar come up the tree at him in Adams / Brown County area.
He shot the cat and took photos.
Clinton County had a sighting by Clinton Lake Campgrounds east of Tiffin, Ohio.

July 2011:
and cat news...

A lady residing near Anderson Ferry and Hillside called the police reporting 2 mountain lions in her woods June 30. I've asked for more detail, but seems there's a lid on it to some degree. Most probably the woman prefers to be left alone. My cat guru says she seems believable and to take a pick. Either siblings, mom and a young one, a mating pair...most likely a or b.

Also a separate sighting last week of a black cat the size of a big dog out side Harrison off Carolina Trace. Reported to have come within 20 feet of a 10 year old, gave the young lad good looking over and then turned and walked away. Hope to be joining the site survey on this one end of the week.

State wide 10 reported sightings to the Ohio Mountain Lion Watch web site in the past 2 weeks, per the site web master.

September 2011:
Got this in a brief conversation with my chief tracker guru and a promise of more detail at our meeting in two weeks.
the latest in Western Hills wildlife...some sort of canine...suspected of being a wolf-coyote hybrid very recently attacked a painter on Muddy Creek Road - between Westbourne and Ebenezer Rds - grabbing him by the leg. I don't know if it actually got the leg or just the pants. Somehow a hammer was thrown and refuge taken in a truck.
This critter or similar critters has/have been seen over the past couple years in spots ranging from crossing a yard on several occasions out near Deer Run to killing the ducks on ponds at the end of Boudinot by Mt.Airy.

About 2 yrs ago I saw one moving across a cut down corn field . I was traveling east on rt 422 out of Youngstown one morning. I was about 4 miles into Pennsylvania. It was 150-200 yrds off the roadway. I was able to look at it for several seconds. There is no doubt in my mind thats what it was. A couple weeks later the news was reporting people seeing one near Beaver falls Pennsylvania which is 30 miles south. I believe it was the same one.

In the past couple of months there have been several reported sightings in the Stark County area as well.
We have also had multiple bobcat sightings reported within 2 miles of my home in the past couple of years.
