I have a Savage bolt gun that is chambered in 7.62x39. It was built with a .308 bore so I can reload for it using a wider selection of better components. The barrel is a 10 twist that is 20" long.
Question I have is what powder to use for jacketed 175 grain, 200 grain and 220 grain bullets?
I have plenty of various powders but still plan on buying what is the "best" for what I want to do.
If possible the load data for the 200 grain and 220 grain bullets should be for subsonic (<1,050 FPS) velocities as well as supersonic. For the 175 grain bullet I only need the data to be for supersonic velocities if possible.
Also, I plan on shooting the subsonic loads through a suppressor so the faster the powder burn rate the better. That is after I get my Form 1 back and build my 30 caliber suppressor.
One more question. Is it possible to use 300 Whisper or 300 BLK load data as a starting point for the 7.62x39? My thinking is the 7.62x39 case is larger so I shouldn't get into any pressure issues starting with the same charge weights. I would use the 300's data as a starting point then work up from there.
Thanks

WHERE did you get the bbl? My brother's been wanting a 7.62x39 bolt gun for forever, & he has a ton of Savages.

Barrel blank and a shop to do the work. ALl I use is Savage for projects because they are so easy to swap calibers on.
For the bolt head it was opened up from .378" to .445". Or for a cheaper solution Sharp Shooter Supply sells a PPC extractor for use with .473" bolt heads.
A .473" (308 Win) bolt head will extract the cases 90% of the time without a special extractor.

Just have one built!
175 SMK's with 23.5 grains of VV 130 gave 2,000 ft/sec according to my notes. I never loaded anything heavier than that. 155's with AA1680 (25 grains) gave 2200 ft/secs.
Do not use 300 Blackout data relative to the 7.62 x 39, case capacities are too different!
