 Sunflowers? (for doves)

Ok my inlaws have some property that i hunt off of (660 acres). I'd like to attract more doves to the area, it has water (river) and i'd like to plant some sunflowers this year.

What time of the year would one sow sunflower seeds? This is going to be a very small patch ( i plan on brodcasting by hand or small spreader ), then i'll mow a strip or two right before the season.

( i have looked at my local laws and from what i understand this is legal)

Check this document out, or this one. Dates may need to be adjusted for your area, but it should get you started. FWIW - we have had better success with wheat than sunflowers for a lot less effort involved to get the field prepped - obviously YMMV.
